Accessibility Internship

Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens welcomes over 100,000 visitors each year to experience the beauty of our formal gardens, art collections, and the legacy of our founder, Marjorie Merriweather Post. Our commitment to accessibility ensures that all visitors can fully engage with and enjoy the estate, and we are seeking an Accessibility Intern to support this important work.

About the Role:
Hillwood is committed to making the estate, its galleries, gardens, and programs accessible and welcoming to everyone. We are seeking a motivated Accessibility Intern to help us take that commitment further.

This is a project-based, hands-on role with real scope: you’ll compile and analyze accessibility data from across the full estate, identify and prioritize improvement opportunities, research outside organizations and resources that can support our work, and help plan concrete improvements we can test. If you care about inclusive design and want to see your research lead to real action, this role is for you.

What You’ll Do:

  • Compile existing accessibility data, feedback, and observations from across the estate into a centralized, organized format
  • Analyze findings to identify, prioritize, and rank accessibility improvement ideas
  • Research external organizations, agencies, grants, and best practices in museum and estate accessibility
  • Develop a plan for piloting select accessibility improvements, including goals and success measures
  • Collaborate with colleagues across departments to gather input and build shared momentum
  • Participate in meetings, public programs, and daily museum operations
  • Connect with staff across Hillwood to explore career pathways in the museum and nonprofit field

What We’re Looking For:
We welcome applicants from a wide range of academic backgrounds. Students in museum studies, public history, disability studies, accessibility, architecture, urban planning, public policy, communications, and related fields are encouraged to apply.

  • Current undergraduate, post-graduate, or graduate student in a relevant field
  • Interest in accessibility, inclusive design, and creating welcoming environments
  • Strong research and organizational skills
  • Ability to synthesize information and make clear recommendations
  • Self-directed with the ability to manage a multi-part project
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Availability of 10–16 hours per week
  • Ability to move throughout the estate and occasionally lift up to 15 lbs.

Compensation & Details:
This is a paid, on-site internship at $20.14/hour. Interns may also be eligible to receive academic course credit in coordination with their university.
