For centuries, European women artists who achieved professional artistic careers were deemed anomalous or exceptional, while those who engaged in creative pursuits in the home were dismissed as amateurs and their works categorized as material culture rather than art. The 2023-24 exhibition Making Her Mark: A History of Women Artists in Europe, 1400-1800, co-organized by the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Art Gallery of Ontario, addressed these tenacious narratives through the presentation of more than 200 works of diverse media and scale, reflecting the breadth of women's contributions to the creative culture of early modern Europe. This talk will share the motivations behind the exhibition's genesis and insights gained from its realization.

This lecture will be presented by Andaleeb Badiee Banta, Senior Curator and Department Head of Prints, Drawings & Photographs at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Banta is also the author of Making Her Mark: A History of Women Artists in Europe, 1400-1800, which she will be signing copies of after the lecture.
