About this object

The handle of the lorgnette is enameled in pale green on a guilloche ground, cut to imitate the undulating patterns of a satin fabric. At both ends are mounts of acanthus leaves and other, more stylized plant forms cast in green, red, and yellow gold. There is a ring at the bottom for holding the lorgnette. It and the rims of the lenses are decorated with an applied continuous leaf motif in green gold.

MARK: 56 [Kokoshnik facing left] [Cyrillic initials AR] [All in a lozenge-shaped mark struck inside bridge/nosepiece] 56 is the gold standard; a kokoshnik facing left indicates that the piece was made between 1899 and 1908; the Cyrillic initials AR are those of Aleksandr Vasil'evich Romanov, assaymaster and head of district (upravlaiushchii okrugom), St. Petersburg, active April 1, 1904 to 1912. MARK: H.W. [Roman initials in an oval shaped mark, struck inside bridge] Maker's mark of Henrik Wigström. Note: A lorgnette or a pair of spectacles had to marked here by law.
