Museum Teaching Specialist

Reports to: Head of Youth Audiences

Employment Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

Hillwood is seeking a Museum Teaching Specialist to join our Interpretation team as a lead instructor for school and Girl Scout programs. This regular part-time role offers up to 24 hours per week with a consistent weekday and weekend schedule that combines educational excellence with professional growth opportunities.

What You’ll Do

As the Museum Teaching Specialist, you will serve as the primary instructor for youth educational programming and support the coordination of program logistics.

Program Delivery

  • Lead 90-minute onsite field trips for school groups
  • Lead 45-minute virtual field trips for schools
  • Facilitate onsite Girl Scout programs on weekends, including:
  • Guided tours of Hillwood’s mansion or gardens
  • Hands-on art projects

Program Coordination

  • Serve as the main point of contact for teachers and Girl Scout troop leaders while groups are onsite
  • Coordinate with group leaders and internal departments to ensure smooth program operations
  • Maintain all educational program supplies
  • Coordinate setup and teardown for all programs

Program Development & Support

  • Support the development of new lesson plans
  • Assist with creating educational materials
  • Help refine curriculum alignment
  • Manage program logistics, including teacher communications and supply inventory

 

Who You Are

  • Experience teaching or working with K–12 students in formal or informal educational settings
  • A warm, engaging teaching presence that inspires young learners
  • Strong organizational and logistical coordination skills
  • A collaborative work style and comfort partnering across departments
  • Excellent verbal communication and creative problem-solving abilities
  • Commitment to creating welcoming experiences for diverse youth audiences
  • Knowledge of school curricula and educational standards preferred
  • Previous museum or cultural institution experience valued

Availability to work:

  • Weekday mornings, Tuesday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
  • Several weekend days per month, as scheduled
