Kids Euro Festival: Baba Marta's Yarn
This traditional Bulgarian legend tells the story of Baba Marta, a mythical character who brings the end of cold weather and the beginning of spring. On the first day of March it is an old Bulgarian custom to give and wear martenitsi--small dolls made of red and white yarn--while wishing family and friends "Chestita Baba Marta!" ("Happy Grandma Marta!")
With puppets and props made of yarn, master storyteller Julia Tasheva spins a tale about welcoming the coming of spring with two of Bulgaria's most famous martenitsi, Pizho and Penda, while sharing their message of friendship.
Recommended for children ages 5-11.
Presented as part of Kids Euro Festival, a two-week festival of free family events and performances throughout Washington, DC presented by European Union members and local arts organizations.
