Museum Shop Merchandise Associate

Reports to: Head of Retail Operations and Shop Experience

Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens welcomes over 100,000 visitors annually to experience the beauty of our gardens, the richness of our decorative arts collection, and the lasting legacy of Marjorie Merriweather Post. The Museum Shop plays an important role in extending the Hillwood experience, offering guests the opportunity to take home meaningful mementos and gifts that reflect the museum’s mission and history.

We are seeking a Museum Shop Merchandise Associate to provide exceptional customer service and support in both store and online operations. This position is ideal for a retail professional who is enthusiastic about creating an engaging shopping environment, maintaining visually appealing merchandise displays, and ensuring a gracious and memorable shopping experience for every visitor.

About the Role:

The Museum Shop Merchandise Associate supports daily shop operations, ensuring merchandise presentation, inventory accuracy, and customer service excellence. Responsibilities include assisting with merchandise displays and signage, processing incoming and outgoing inventory, fulfilling web orders, and supporting pop-up shops and special events. The role requires strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and a commitment to creating a welcoming environment that reflects Hillwood’s high standards of hospitality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with merchandise displays, layout updates, and shop presentation to ensure a visually engaging experience

  • Support inventory processes, including receiving, inspecting, labeling, and cycle counts

  • Maintain cleanliness and appearance of the shop, graphics, and signage

  • Fulfill web orders and reconcile Shopify receipts with POS transactions

  • Provide exceptional customer service in line with Hillwood’s standards of gracious hospitality

  • Operate the cash register, process payments, and handle returns professionally

  • Assist with merchandise setup for pop-up shops and off-site events

  • Communicate low stock levels, special orders, or requests to leadership

  • Ensure compliance with loss prevention and inventory control procedures

Qualifications:

  • 3–5 years of retail experience, preferably in a museum or specialty boutique setting

  • Strong customer service orientation with polished communication skills

  • Ability to create engaging and creative merchandise displays

  • Familiarity with point-of-sale systems; Shopify experience a plus

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; Canva or other publishing software experience preferred

  • Detail-oriented with strong time management skills

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff and volunteers
