Explore the cutting garden, discuss the language of flowers, and learn methods of preserving the delicate blooms, before creating your own beautiful arrangement of pressed flowers.

Grace Kelly was known for her impeccable balancing of stately elegance and Hollywood glamour, as highlighted in the exhibition Grace of Monaco: Princess in Dior. She was also an avid presser of flowers, creating beautifully balanced arrangements that inspired this onsite workshop. 

Explore the cutting garden, discuss the language of flowers, and learn methods of preserving the delicate blooms with Director of Horticulture Jessica Bonilla. Then design beautiful arrangements of pressed flowers—including some grown and pressed at Hillwood—that you will use to fill two of your own hanging glass frames (6"x 6.5" and 8"x 10.5") with the guidance of artist and Public Programs Manager Sulay Khin.

All materials are included. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing. This program is limited to sixteen participants and must have a minimum of four participants. In the event the workshop is canceled due to low enrollment, participants may choose a refund or to participate in another session. This workshop is recommended for ages 10 and older, and all children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult registrant.

PROGRAM GUIDELINES

Proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 is required for all ages 12 and up to attend this onsite program. Patrons must display a physical or digital copy of their vaccination card/record and a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license with the same name upon arrival at the program. Ticket purchasers are responsible for communicating these rules to whomever they provide tickets. The vaccine requirement also applies to staff and volunteers.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS 

Jessica Bonilla (she/her) became Hillwood’s director of horticulture in 2020, after more than a decade working in the horticulture department. She leads her staff in maintaining all aspects of garden and greenhouse upkeep. With over twenty years of experience, she started her career in commercial landscaping and in 2000 became head gardener at a private estate in Rochester, NY, where she also ran her own landscaping business. She currently leads a variety of educational programs at Hillwood and has a bachelor’s degree in Landscape Contracting from Penn State. 
 

Sulay Khin (she/her) became Hillwood’s public program manager in 2021 and supports public programming including festivals. She has developed various arts programming for CREATE, a visual arts non-profit in Silver Spring. She earned her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Arts, with a personal focus on oil portraits, ceramics and installation. She’s often fond of using the language and stories of flowers in her own work.
