Summer Volunteers for Accessibility Assessment Project

Are you passionate about accessibility, architecture, or museums? Want to build real-world skills in data collection, documentation, and inclusion work? Hillwood is looking for enthusiastic student volunteers to join our Accessibility Assessment Project this summer. 

As a volunteer, you'll help assess the accessibility of Hillwood's historic buildings using a standardized tool. Your work will directly support our efforts to make Hillwood more inclusive and welcoming to all visitors. 

Project Timeline

  • Duration: Summer 2025
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (create a schedule that works for you!)
  • Location: Onsite at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens in NW Washington, D.C.
  • Eligibility: Students ages 16+

What You'll Do

  • Learn how to evaluate physical accessibility in buildings and public spaces
  • Use a standardized form to assess doorways, ramps, stairs, paths, and exhibition layouts
  • Work independently after training to evaluate more than 10 different structures across campus
  • Meet weekly with your project supervisor to share updates and ask questions
  • Compile your findings into a final report to help inform future accessibility improvements
