About this object

On the cover in niello is a view of the Moscow Kremlin from the Moscow (Moskva) River. The Large Stone Bridge and a group of small stone buildings outside the Kremlin are visible in the foreground. The Kremlin’s “cityscape” is dominated by the Bell Tower of Ivan the Great and the Great Kremlin Palace and Kremlin Towers are all visible. At far right, the domes of St. Basil’s are clearly rendered. The background is engraved to suggest rays of the sun. The remainder of the box is decorated with elaborate scrolls and Russian style motifs in niello. The interior is gilded and there are two pairs of hooks to hold an elastic band.
