About this object

The cup is in gilt and set in a silver basket-like openwork of interlaced quatre foils. This has four oval enameled medallions surrounded by table-cut paste stones. These are enameled with 1. Christ blessing, 2. St. John the Baptist holding a cup and a scroll, 3. Christ on the cross, 4. the Mother of God. The central portion is an urn-shaped baluster. The base has a repoussé design of leaves and flowers and is set with four medallions each surrounded with table cut paste stones. These medallions have the following scenes: 1. Gethsemane, 2. Christ before Caiphas, the high priest, 3. the road to Calvary, 4. the Entombment. In each Christ is identified by an inscription. Around the cup runs the inscription in Russian: "Accept the Body of Christ; taste of the Immortal Source."
