About this object
The carnet is made in the shape of a book. Both the front and back covers have frames in gold, composed of two reeded gold borders over which there is a vine scroll and swags of leaves and flowers carved in gold. The background, both front and back is in silver cloth. On the front is a repousse plaque of a winged figure at the left and two nude putti at the right, one with a cornucopia, holding up a medallion with EP (Elizabeth Petrovna) surmounted by the imperial crown. Below is a shield with the imperial eagle. On the reverse is a similar gold plaque with the imperial eagle. A medallion with EP, a winged figure, leaves and flowers, etc. On the interior the notebook has some writing said to be that of the Empress Elizabeth I. The implement is reeded and has at the end a carnelian seal engraved with the monogram EP and the imperial crown. One end is a sewing, grooming, or writing implement (not a pencil) whose tip can be removed and has pen nib at other end.
