About this object

The shield-shaped box is made in spar, as is the cover. The mounting is made in carved and engraved gold with rococo scrolls and other motifs. On the cover is an elaborate setting in white and iridescent mother of pearl with arches, a stairway, and a fountain. In the center, carved in silver and gold, is a group consisting of Diana the huntress with her hounds and two playing cupids. Above are another Cupid and some hanging game, including a stag and a wild boar, with a rifle, arrows, and hunting horn. To the right carved in gold and silver is a Cupid, trees, and flowers. The front is divided into two panels, each with a cluster of trophies in mother of pearl. To the left is a group of musical instruments, to the right a globe and scientific instruments. On the ends are similar clusters of trophies. To the right are a helmet, a battle axe, and a spear. To the left are a lyre and other musical instruments. On the back is a single cluster of trophies with a bagpipe and spear.
