Digital Services Intern (Summer 2024)

Are you passionate about preserving historical records and making them accessible in the digital age? Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens invites applications for a dynamic internship opportunity in our Archives and Special Collections Department, specifically focused on digital services.

Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens is a renowned cultural institution located in Washington, D.C., dedicated to preserving and sharing the legacy of founder Marjorie Merriweather Post. With an extensive collection of art, artifacts, and archival materials, Hillwood offers a unique environment for hands-on learning and professional growth.

Internship Overview:

The Digital Services Intern will work closely with our Digital Services Archivist on a critical project: processing the 30-year backlog of institutional electronic records for archiving in Hillwood’s online digital preservation platform, Preservica. This hands-on experience will involve reviewing electronic records, ensuring compliance with institutional records retention schedules, organizing files according to established conventions, and preparing them for upload to Preservica.

Training and Mentorship:

Under the expert guidance of the Digital Services Archivist, the intern will receive comprehensive training in essential skills for electronic records management. This includes proficiency in command-line computer coding and scripting, mastering Microsoft Excel functions for managing metadata, and learning to create collections in Preservica. By participating in this project, the intern will gain invaluable insights into current best practices for preserving electronic records and ensuring continued access to historical materials.

Requirements:

We are seeking candidates who are entering, enrolled in, or have recently graduated from a Library Science program or a related field. This opportunity is ideal for graduate students seeking to fulfill field study requirements or gain practical experience. We will also consider undergraduate students interested in entering Library Science or related fields

Candidates must demonstrate advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with other Microsoft Office products. Knowledge of coding is advantageous but not required. This internship is fully remote, applicants must have access to reliable internet and a comfortable working environment.

This internship offers a unique chance to contribute to the preservation of Hillwood’s rich history while gaining practical skills in digital archiving and records management. As part of our team, you will play a vital role in safeguarding both the physical and digital legacy of our institution, ensuring its accessibility for generations to come.

This is a part-time position; our normal business hours are Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm and there is some flexibility in selection hours that work best for you. The position pays $20.14/hr for approximately 12 weeks.
