Job Summary:

The staff Accountant is responsible for day-today accounting tasks, including but not limited to maintaining financial records, preparing financial reports, reconciling account balances and bank statements, maintaining a general ledger, assisting with payroll and preparing month-end close procedures

Key Job Elements:

  • Verify, allocate, post, and reconcile accounts payable and receivable 
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of accounts payable, accounts receivable and general ledger functions
  • Review, organize and update financial records
  • Perform accurate preparation of month end closing entries 
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliation
  • Prepare financial statements for accuracy and completeness
  • Prepare and file tax returns 
  • Prepare documentation for external auditors and assist with annual audit
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly and fiscal year close and reporting
  • Research issues and problems; recommend and implement solutions
  • Ensure accounting policies are followed 
  • Work closely with the Director of Finance and other team members to improve accounting processes. Enhance financial reporting, establish controls, and implement best practices
  • Train staff members on finance protocols, ensure they know how to access finance forms and understand policies
  • Provide back-up support to other members of finance department during peak periods and short-term absences
  • Other tasks and responsibilities as required.

Organizational Relationships:

  • Reports to Director of Finance.
  • Interacts with various levels of staff and vendors.

Requirements:

Knowledge 

  • 2-4 years’ experience in a accounting or bookkeeping roles
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices
  • General accounting skills and protocols 
  • General ledger and accounting system experience (MIP Fund Accounting is a plus) 

Skills and Abilities

  • Expert proficiency with manipulation and analysis of data in Microsoft Excel is a must 
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills 
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare reports
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal communications skills.  
  • Follow oral and written instructions; maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population
  • Highly organized with demonstrated time management skills and including multi-tasking
  • Willing to learn and able to adapt to meeting ongoing deadlines 
  • Works independently with moderate supervision, interacting effectively with and quickly gaining the respect and support of museum staff.
