About this object

Two terracotta sphinxes believed to be representing Marie Antoinette and Marie Therese, Princess de Lamballe. The originals are in the gardens at Menars on the Loire. The sphinxes rest on rectangular bases. Their heads turn slightly to the right. Both heads are wearing caps that tie under their chins. They are wearing the bodice of a dress, but the lion part of the body is covered in a drapery.
