About this object

The river Fontanka, contained within granite embankments, is in the center of the composition. The Grotto, one of the most lavish pavilions of Peter’s Summer Garden, can be seen on the right and on the left are a series of . The exterior was decorated with Dutch and Italian sculpture set in marble niches or along the roofline, while the interior boasted imported statues of Neptune, tritons, and dolphins, fountains, marble covered walls, mirrors, and allegorical bas-reliefs depicting Peter’s military victories and wise governance. (Note: The Grotto fell into disrepair and was torn down. Today, Carlo Rossi’s Coffee House stands in its place.)
