About this object
The Novgorod miracleworker St. Varlaam stands to the right on a brown hillock overlooking the Volkhova river and the Transfiguration monastery which he founded in the 12th century at Khutin near Novgorod. He wears the cowl and stole of the highest monstastic order and turns with both hands raised towards the upper left corner, where Christ emerges from a bank of clouds, his right hand raised in blessing. The ground is painted with bronze powder imitating gold leaf and a narrow brown border with ochre filenka frames the icon.
