About this object
St. Nicholas the Miracleworker is shown full-length with arms outstretched, a short curved sword in his right hand, a model of a church and belltower in his left. He wears a red-lined cope with cruciform motifs and an omophorion. In rondels to either side of his bare head are half-length figures of Christ and the Protection of the Mother of God. He stands on a red platform against a dark green ground. A slightly lighter green fills the upper ground and continues across the carved luzga onto the polia, ending with a triple filenka of red, yellow and ochre. A silvered metal oklad with beaded inner edge surrounds the saint, showing him towering over the clear sky and low horizon of a hilly Italianate landscape. Two stamped and chased foliate borders, the inner one of flowering sprays trailing from a wicker backet at the base and culminating in the stamped inscription "Image of Nicholas the Miracleworker" at the top, the outer a repeat pattern of stylized flowers and leaves.
