About this object
The half-length figure of St. George is painted on a curved oval plaque of mother of pearl in a smooth silver mount. He is dressed in armor over a dark blue tunic with full sleeves gathered in a gold cuff. A coral red cloak is draped over his left shoulder and he holds a spear in his right hand and a shield with triangular motif in his left. His beardless face with its piercing black eyes, long nose and sensual mouth, is painted in the manner of late 19th century academic painting. The medallion is mounted on a rectangular silver gilt plaque guillauched with an overall pattern of damask trefoil sprigs on a ground of fine lines. Beneath the medallion is a coat of arms (a double headed eagle with cross and crozier beneath a Greek? crown on an ermine field, two crossed keys beneath, with Greek? letters). A suspension hook is mounted in the center top edge.
