About this object

The Mother of God wears a brown maphorion with a gold border and gold star on the left shoulder and forehead. Christ, dressed in a red hymation with yellow painted drapery folds over a white chiton, presses his left cheek against his mother's face and encircles her neck with his left arm. The facial features are characterized by thick black eyebrows and strongly delineated noses, mouths and chin creases. Strokes of white paint highlight the forhead and outer corners of the eyes and the knuckles of the hands. The ground of the icon is adorned with a silver gilt repousse oklad with touches of yellow, green, white and pale blue enamel. The borders are marked by an elaborate rinceau of twining leaves with pine cones, with engraved spandrels at each corner. The ground of the kovcheg is covered with a scale pattern. The haloes of the Mother of God and Christ are plain silver set with floral cartouches and edged with a lacy border. Inserted in the back of the board are two carved and dovetailed transverse shponki.
