About this object

Scenes from the life of the Mother of God are laid out in three registers in the center of the icon: 1) the Offerings are Rejected, 2) the Annunciation to Joachim and Anna, 3) the Meeting of Joachim and Anna, 4) the Birth of the Mother of God, 5) the Bathing of the Mother of God, 6) the First Steps, 7) the Presentation to Zachariah in the Temple. These scenes are framed by eighteen medallions, with God Savaoth at top center flanked by the Archangel Michael to his right and the Archangel Gabriel to his left. The rest of the medallions contain prophets and apostles, each holding a scroll whose inscription has almost disappeared. The icon is brightly painted in pinks, blues, and purples in a miniature style. The board is carved and a red border with blue corners decorated with chrysography defines the kovcheg. The once gilded borders are now cream colored. The board has no shponki and is barely warped.
