About this object
Ivan Grigoryevich Seniavin (1801-51) was born in a family which included many famous Russian officers. He began his career in the army. In the early 1830s he worked towards becoming a statesman and ultimately held various positions, such as governor. Married since 1827 to Alexandra d’Hoggauer, who is also featured in the Middleton Album (52.39.36), he belonged to Alexander Pushkin’s circle.
The oval bust-length portrait presents Ivan Grigoryevich Seniavin with his body facing forward and his face and eyes turned slightly right, against a background of light grey clouds. The young man is shown with blond curly hair. He wears a black uniform with a red and silver collar, a silver aiguillette, and silver epaulettes over a beige waistcoat and black cravat.
