About this object

This is an imaginary landscape in the classical vein of the 18th century. There are a number of classical ruins probably taken from real monuments and assembled here. The bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius from the Capitoline Hill is to center left. A large column is on the left side of the painting. At its base is a half circle of columns. In the center is part of a wall with an arch in the center and two statues in niches to the right side. At far right is another arch. In front of this arch is part of another colonnaded building. At the left is a woman speaking to two youths seated on a fragment of a marble cornice. At the right is a woman taking water from a well and a seated man addressing another woman, both sitting on marble ruins. To the far right is a soldier, walking to the left and holding a staff. Under the large arch in the center are two men conversing and pointing. Behind them is a mountainous landscape.
