This painting show the start of the race with eighteen jockeys dressed up in different colors and riding horses of different colors. They are grouped in the center of the canvas, facing to the left. The horses are at full gallop. A group of people and a white flag may be seen in the middle distance, and another group is to the far left. The background shows rolling country fields with leafless trees.
