Creator(s): Carl Wilhelm Hahn (Painter)

About this object

A scene on a quay in Naples, Italy. There is a row of buildings to the left, tall with high windows. In the far distance is the Vesuvius volcano with steam coming out from it. To the right is the ocean with a few boats moored at the edge of the water. In the center foreground is the market scene. To the right are several goats, some lying down, others standing and being examined by a father and daughter. To the left of them is a horse drawn cart laden with goods. A woman rides on of the horses, and a man stands next to the cart, displaying a length of material. There are several women looking at his wares, and several children sit on the ground next to their mothers. At the far left are other venders and buyers. There are two priests walking toward the back of the painting. The sky is blue, and the distant mountains are snowcapped against a rosy haze.
