About this object
The portrait is identified as Mrs. Heron. She is seen in three quarters length facing to the right with her head looking forward. Her dark brown hair is dressed high in the fashion of the day. She wears a white dress with sprigs of flowers embroidered in gold. Over the dress is a sleeveless cloak in grey, edged in fur trim. Her belt is in gold and she holds a book in her right hand in her lap, with her thumb holding her place. Her left arm is extended and rests on the arm of the chair. Mrs. Heron is seated out-of-doors with trees at the left of the painting behind her and there is a view at the distant right. The portrait is of Catherine, daughter of Jacob Sawbridge of Canterbury who married Thomas Heron as his second wife, surviving him for many years.
