About this object
This gown, with its high neck and longer sleeves, would have been appropriate for afternoon calling and garden parties.
This two-piece pigeon-breasted afternoon gown exemplifies the classic S bend shape of the period. The bodice consists of cutwork blue-gray velvet heavily studded with metal beads, light organza with bands of machine embroidered lace, and a filled in neck line with a high stand collar of contrasting lace. Short, semi-puffed sleeves are tightly fitted over the bicep with two rows of flat, lace trim edged in velvet. The skirt is made from the same materials. Vertical velvet bands extend down the center front, center back, and sides, where they join a horizontal band with metal beads in a swag or lavalier pattern. Fine silk organza supports the lace trim throughout. The skirt is finished with a wide ruffle at the hem and a slight train.
