About this object

Yellow velvet dress cut in two pieces. Bodice has a V-neckline in front with bell-shaped long sleeves. Dress closes at center front under a decorative placket embellished with metallic thread embroidery. The skirt is gathered at the dropped waist and is heavily smocked at center front. Bands of embroidery in gold, brown, green and blue metallic thread decorate the skirt and sleeves. The sleeveless silk crêpe lining follows the shape of the dress and is edged at bottom with a band of lace and a layer of silk organza sewn in a scalloped design. A decorative slip, similar to 48.60.3, would have been worn with the garment. Note that the embroidered designs on skirt were applied before the garment was constructed, as evidenced by the center back seam where pattern is not matched.
