About this object
Marjorie Merriweather Post purchased this dress on a trip to Paris. The silhouette of the dress is created by a divided skirt with an uneven hem, a feature popular in fashion after World War I.
Empire waisted, low back, evening dess with a fitted bodice of gold and black silk brocade. The short capped sleeves are of black tulle. The garment is constructed on a black silk underskirt with an embroidered black tulle overlay. Two irregularly cut panels of solid tulle are attached at sides. A small decorative ruching of silk brocade is attached at center back waist. A brocade panel extends from waist to hem where it is turned under and attached to the underskirt at center front hem. This design creates a divided skirt with an uneven hem.
