About this object

One piece black reception gown of embroidered black tulle. The neckline and sleeve are heavily encrusted with machine sewn silver beads and sequins in a floral pattern. The bodice has a free-hanging bolero underneath which is placed a metal mesh inset with orange beads in a lattice pattern. This mesh is also used on the undersleeve. The bodice is supported by a silk taffeta foundation with modesty panel. The skirt is composed of pieced and handsewn sections of tulle with applied flat velvet bands and lace in a scalloped motif. The skirt is floor length in front, sweeping to a long train at center back. The garment would have been worn with a petticoat, probably in the same fabric as the foundation. The early use of machine sewn sequins is significant.
