EVENING DRESS

About this object
This gray evening gown has an off-the-shoulder, bateau back drape. The strapless bodice is supported by a lining with spiral boning. The bodice is ruched and pleated at the center front seam to shape the bust. Curved strips of pleated fabric edged in self fabric cord are applied flat to each side of the bodice. These appliqués are wired at the bodice edge where the back drape, worn low across the shoulder blades, is attached. The waist seam is concealed by a decorative fabric strip. A narrow underskirt is enhanced by a fuller, open overskirt. This unlined overskirt is decorated with six curved, pleated appliqués, repeating the motif used on the bodice. A band of horsehair is used to stiffen the hem of the overskirt. The garment closes at the center back with a long metal zipper that extends from the top edge of the bodice to the narrow underskirt. A second, shorter zipper that begins at the waist secures the overskirt.
