About this object
The ecclesiastical belt or stole is made of a thin strip of the fabric used for vestments worn by clergy participating in the Coronation of Nicholas II. The visible pattern depicts only stylized leaves and a series of three crowns. (A double-headed eagle is visible on other pieces. See related objects in Notes.) There is a ¾ inch-wide border of scrolling vine rinceau executed in laid and couched stitches with a red silk outline. Spaced evenly on the stole are three crowns, each surmounted by a cross. The cross is stitched with silver-wrapped threads that have retained an untarnished appearance. The lining is of white silk with an inner backing of burlap or linen.
