About this object
The central portion is a fine brocade with an all-over pattern of Latin, equal-armed crosses in red velvet edged in gold alternating with tiny eight-pointed stars in red velvet with a gold center. Each of the crosses is also ornamented with a pair of barbed "crowns of thorns" in an off-white or beige velvet that is woven to appear to wrap around the fronts and backs of the cross. The background is in gilt threads. The border is decorated with a wide band of gold and silver metal lace ornamented with a curling, foliate pattern. Applied to the center is a large star in gold- and silver-wrapped silk threads couched over cotton or paper and decorated with gilt spangles. A deep red silk ribbon has been sewn to the top of the garment, but does not appear to be original to it. The top of the garment appears to have been cut or trimmed and then hemmed with a strip of orange linen. The ribbon is attached to this with white and black thread.
