About this object
Set of 2. The background of this pokrovets (chalice cover) is made of a deep red-brown velvet edged with a long fringe of gold-wrapped yellow silk thread. The central cross is rendered in stumpwork embroidered in two-color gold threads; the rays are in gold sequins embroidered with twisted gold thread. On the four ends of the cross are embroidered a repeated ornament of a gold chalice on silver and gold cloud-like form rendered in a raised stumpwork. Light seems to pour from the top of the chalice in rays rendered of twisted gold wire and spangles. Each chalice has grapevines with grapes on either side, signifying the wine used in the service.
