About this object

Needlework shows a man on horseback galloping to the left set in a landscape. He aims a pistol with his right hand. He has a curled moustache, and wears a turban like hat, white tunic and pants, a reddish bodice and a cape which billows out behind. He appears Turkish or Far Eastern in appearance. The horse has an elaborate set of reins, saddle and other trappings. The ground is covered with large leaves and flowers in the foreground. To the left and center are two classical ruins with columns in the background on the banks of a body of water. The sky has some sketchy clouds. Originally part of a larger rug.
