About this object
Cloth is composed a seventeenth-century seed pearl embroidery in the center surrounded by eighteenth-century figured silk. The central section is deep red velvet panel measuring 8.5 inches x 8.5 inches. A tall inscription rendered in a raised seed pearl embroidery surrounds an equal-armed cross ornamented with paste stones in gilt metal mounts. The edges of the central panel is edged in band of half-circles in stumpwork of gold-wrapped silk thread. The background is made of a figured silk with sprays of flowers in red, green, and blue divided by a meandering pattern in white silk and gold-wrapped silk threads outlined in a deep brown silk. (The colors have largely faded.) This is edged with an inch-wide band of woven lace made from fine gold-wrapped beige silk threads. The entire piece is edged with gold fringe made of gold-wrapped yellow silk thread that has retained its color. Sewn to the back is a linen printed with a red and tan abstract floral pattern.
