About this object

The background is a red velvet with a silver gilt fringe. In the enter is appliqued a cross embroidered in three-color gold and silver threads. In the center of the cross is the Pieta--the face and hands of the Mother of God and the outstretched body of the dead Christ are painted in oil on card while the remainder of the figures are rendered in cloth and embroidery. This central motif of the cross has a silver frame with ears of wheat and grapes embroidered in gold and silver in the corners. In each of the outer corners is a seraphim, the face being painted, the halos and wings embroidered in gold and silver. These seraphim are encircled by palm branches. On the center of each side are large clusters of grapes and wheat embroidered in gold and silver.
