About this object

The mull is shaped as an oblong box cut from a piece of rather flat horn. The bottom and cover are both pieces of horn, with the cover being lined with cork. On the front is an oval medallion. The silver rim about the top edge is plain. The silver hinge on the cover has a flat trefoil design and three nail heads. On the cover is applied a relief of two men seated and smoking, identified as Tam O'Shanter and Soutar Johnny.
