THREE CAMEO PORTRAITS

Creator(s): Tommaso Saulini (Workshop) , Luigi Saulini (Workshop) , Unknown (Jeweler)

About this object

The shell cameo portraits represent three members of a family formerly identified as Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna (1819-1876), daughter of Nicholas I, her husband Maximilian, Duke of Leuchtenberg (1817-1852) and their eldest son, Nicholas (1843-1891). They are now believed to be members of the Karloff family. They are all bust sized, facing to the left. The frames surrounding the cameos are all slightly different. The unidentified parents’ cameos are surrounded with gold scrolls enameled in blue and white, while the scrolls around the young boy's miniature are enameled in turquoise and set with three rubies.
