About this object

The long oval box has rounded ends. It is plain except for the cover which contains a miniature scene of several sailing vessels carved in relief in ivory on an ivory sea. The ships are sailing with all sails furled. There are two in the front of the miniature, with several along the horizon. The sky is painted black. This is framed in a narrow gold band. The miniature faces away from the thumbpiece. The bottom is lined with red velvet and the cover is set with a mirror, now much darkened.
