About this object
The outside of the rectangular box is covered in tortoise shell carved with an all-over pattern like a textile. The cover is set with a grisaille enamel plaque. The scene copies the Nicolas Lancret painting, "Manhood." It is painted with a scene in a park with young couples. Three of the couples are love making, two of the men are engaged in an archery contest, and two young ladies look on with boredom. The enamel plaque is framed in gold which is repoussé as is the thumbpiece. The interior is lined with tortoiseshell.
