On cover of the hinged box is scene from the fairy tale of Ilya Muromets and the Dragon. The bogatyr Ilya Muromets, wearing armor and riding a white horse, can be seen in a fanciful wooded landscape. He has just shot an arrow in the direction of Solovei Razboinik (the Robber), wearing a red robe and fur-trimmed cap and kneeling in the lower branches of a large tree. The exterior of the box is lacquered black and decorated with a decorative gilt rinceau highlighted with tiny white florettes. The interior is red.
