The rectangular hinged black lacquer box decorated with a combat scene between two warriors on horseback -- one Russian, the other a Tartar. The Tartar appears to have ben wounded and is falling from his horse. The image is framed with a decorative gilt border and a gilt rinceau decorates the sides of the box. The interior is red.
