About this object

The walnut frame of the sofa is of serpentine outline with three convex curves on back and seat. This are ribbed and carved at each section of the back and of the seat rail with pairs of roses. The front corners of the seat are also carved with a rosebud, while the shoulders and space between the roses on the back are decorated with leafy scrolls. The tapestry covers represent scenes of La Fontaine's Fables from Oudry's designs within elaborate rococo frames with flowers and a rose background. On the back an owl in a tree with other birds flying around. On the seat a stag at the right fleeing into a forest pursued by dogs coming from the left.
