About this object
The tops is in a variegated red marble. The front is split crosswise for two large drawers, each has two ornate handles in gilt bronze, each flanked by flowery sprays. The handles are outlined in dark wood which give the effect of shadows. Strips of dark wood frame the whole front and a large oval medallion in the center which contains a large bouquet of flowers tied at the bottom by a ribbon with a bowknot. A similar bouquet in a medallion appears on each side of the chest. The surrounding areas have each three leafy motifs in gilt bronze, each outlined in dark wood. Below the body is a narrow band in gilt bronze chased with a leafy design. The legs are plain, slightly curved, and taper downward to small sabots in gilt bronze, shaped like acanthus leaves emerging from scrolls.
