BANQUETTE

Creator(s): Unknown (Cabinet Maker)

On view in: French Drawing Room

About this object

The gilded wood is the Louis XVI style carved with rosettes around the sides and with rectangular tapering legs, channeled, etc. The tapestry seat is antique. The outer edge is with ribbons, swags, and clusters of flowers in colors. The framed central section shows a seated allegorical figure in the center, a woman seated and facing to the left holding a globe or circle. At the left, a cupid flies towards the right carrying a scythe. At the right is another cupid with a shield decorated with a two-tailed merman, a column nearly with a spear and a shield leaning against it. There is a suggestion of a landscape background with trees and flowers.
