About this object
The plate is decorated with a hand-colored transfer print showing a peasant family in the pasture. In the foreground a young woman seated on the ground is playing with a reclining young boy and an infant. In the background a pair of horses is tied to a wagon and to the right of them is a seated peasant. Intricate border around the rim includes ornamental details reminiscent of the carved details of Russian vernacular architecture. Stretched between suspended carved elements are five white embroidered towels each inscribed with a word in Cyrillic which as a whole reads" Bread - salt eat and speak the truth" (traditional Russian proverb)
