About this object

This two-handled bowl, probably a sugar bowl, has a blue band intersected on the front and back by stylized Italianate scenes executed in grisaille, indicating that late neo-classical style in Russia had filtered down to the gentry, the major patrons of the private Popov Factory outside Moscow. High tariffs on the importation of foreign porcelain during the Napoleonic campaigns resulted in the growth and success of such private factories.

This footed bowl with a lid, a compote or possibly a sugar bowl, has a band of medium blue intersected on the front and back with architectural scenes in grisailles on a gold ground. The scenes are stylized Italianate views. A vine of tooled flowers and leaves connects the two panels with views as does a scroll ornament in white with bell flowers. The lid is also decorated with two painted panels and the same ornament in between. The finial on the lid is a pineapple, and a fanned flower bent inward on itself forms the two handles. An unusual feature is the unglazed geometric ornament in reddish brown on the area where the lid meets the bowl. Around the inside of the lid is a floral motif in gold on white. This is repeated inside the bowl.
