About this object

From the Raphael service of which a cup and saucer were already at Hillwood. In the center of one is Hercules .1 wrestling with a bull and on the other .2 Apollo with a lyre. These are in grisaille on a reddish ground with a six sided frame. Near the edge is a meander pattern in gold and a border of Hermes and other motifs. The rim on each plate has three medallions with satyrs, goddesses, etc. on a red ground and three pedicular panels with sphinxes and in between six form panels with decorative motifs in white. These are from the most important service made during the reign of Alexander III.
