About this object
This delicate creamer is double-walled with the outside wall reticulated, or pierced, in the Chinese style. It represents one of the many different technical explorations that Sèvres pursued in the nineteenth century. Despite the difficulty in producing them, these wares were commercially successful. Queen Marie Amélie, wife of King Louis-Philippe of France, bought seven tea sets designed in this style.
Double-walled reticulated cream jug of squat ovoid shape with flaring rim and spout, standing on a low round foot, and with a sugar cane shaped handle. The outer wall is pierced with a decorative fretwork in the Chinese style. The ovoid body is divided into six segments by yellow bands framed in gold. Segments pierced with a honey comb pattern and a central pink flowerette alternate with openwork sections forming a pattern of squares each enclosing a blue lozenge and two interlaced loops in the center in red. the area below the rim is decorated with a band of blue fleur-de-lis against a yellow background. The rounded rim has a band of white and gold meander. On the underside of the lip is a Chinese geometric pattern in blue framed in red and gold against a yellow ground. A similar Chinese design in gold decorates the inside of the lip. The foot is yellow framed with gold bands. The sugar cane handle is painted with a brown luster color, each section of the cane divided by gold bands.
